Energy Monitoring Platform

Project overview

Hugo Energy helps UK homeowners understand and cut their energy use. The brief was a complete platform: smart meter integration, AI tariff and battery recommendations, solar, battery and EV charging tracking, a full analytics dashboard, and native apps for iOS and Android.

The hard parts were technical. Millions of smart meter readings had to be processed in real time, the tariff recommendations had to be accurate, every meter provider and energy supplier had its own API, and sensitive usage data had to be handled in line with GDPR.

Workflow

We built the web platform in React and Node.js with a Python machine learning pipeline behind it, and the mobile apps in React Native with the same features as the web. Redis and WebSockets carry live readings, and one integration layer, with an adapter for each provider, connects UK SMETS1 and SMETS2 smart meters.

The platform runs on AWS in Docker containers managed by Kubernetes, so it scales as the user base grows. Data is encrypted end to end, sign-in uses OAuth 2.0 with role-based access, and delivery ran on test-driven development and continuous deployment.
